Rosa Parks is another well recognized contributor to the end of racial segregation. Back then, they had laws pertaining to bus segregation. While she was in the front of a Montgomery city bus, she was asked to move to the back, so a white man could take her seat. She refused to move because she felt it wasn't fair for this kind of treatment. She was arrested and convicted for not following city laws. In response to this situation, a community of African Americans led a bus protest. After a year, the protest ended once the Supreme Court designated bus segregation unconstitutional. Parks represented dignity, courage, and strength, and this would help with the end of racial segregation. In 1999, she was bestowed with the highest honor any person could receive in the United States. She was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal, which is an amazing feat as evidenced by the other recipients in past years including George Washington and Mother Teresa.
