Our most basic right is freedom of speech. Although we can say whatever's on our mind, there is also a limit to this right, too. The freedom to speak your mind could go from friendly conversations to threats. People voice out the right to free speech. When they say they're going to kill someone and are convicted for those spoken words, they believe that freedom of speech protects them. Wrong!
We are undoubtedly given our right to free speech as written in the United States' Constitution. We have the right to speak. However, it may seem immoral to allow a person who uses his right in the wrong way to even have it at all. And in some cases, they end up in prison for their actions. For example, if someone discriminates someone because of who they are, that is ethically amiss in our society. People didn't fight to gain their freedom to be mocked at by other senseless people. On the other hand, they fought for their rights in order to finally be recognized as an equal to all others.
People have the ability to speak their mind. However, when is it considered wrong when we express our opinions? To put it simply, if it brings harm to others in any mental or emotional way, that's when you have crossed the line. Likewise, in times of terrorism, our right to free speech was useless in the past. In times of dire pandemonium, the government seems to push our rights aside. They decide to tap our lines of communication. Sometimes, they also misread our opinions, and they could arrest the wrong person.
In light of all this, there are some very good people who have used this right well. The people are also helpful in political matters because they give some insight, too. As well, books, poetry, and written works have become inspirational in the eyes of many because we have the right to free speech whether it is written or verbally spoken. This right has helped transcend our society to new heights, and as a result, we hope to look forward to a better, brighter future where we can all truly be equal.
